Re: Improvement to Accuracy of Tilting Spoon Rain Gauges
Update: One months readings showed a significant improvement following application of DWR. At months end, 5" check gauge 147.6mm, Davis Vantage Vue tilting spoon 144.2mm, or 97.8%. I did remove the Vue gauge, and cleaned it under the tap with a stream of water, then wiping with a paper towel. This i...

Emley Moor TV Mast Collapse 19/3/69
This 1265 foot tubular steel guyed mast collapsed on 19 March 1969, after ice accumulation (glaze) built up over a period of hours or days. The replacement tower was built of circular concrete, to prevent a future collapse, and still stands today. An interesting article on the collapse, and the tech...

Improvement to Accuracy of Tilting Spoon Rain Gauges
I've owned 3 of these over the years, most recently, the Davis Vantage Vue. They've all suffered from the problem of incomplete emptying of the spoon upon tilt. This means susequent tips will have a less than designed volume in the spoon, before tipping. In other words, these gauges over-read true r...

Monthly Sty Head Rain Gauge, Cumbria
Does anyone know if this is still current. I understand that it was read monthly by Environment Agency staff. I've seen an article by S. Burt and P. Eden suggesting that it recorded a higher monthly rainfall amount in November 2009, (record monthly rainfall in the British Isles), than the nearby dai...

Calibrating Tipping Bucket Raingauges
If, like me, you wish your tipping-bucket gauge to give daily/monthly totals that agree closely with a manually-read check gauge, you might be interested in my experiences. Manufacturers often calibrate their TBR's to read correct at high rainfall rates, typically 2" per hour, such gauges will over-...

Re: Stainless Steel Hellmann Rain Gauge
Thank you for your reply, Mike. I finally resolved the problem by taking the Gauge out of service, and submerging the funnel in a rainwater butt. I've just taken it out after 2 months. The droplets no longer adhere to the inside of the funnel. I guess the funnel has been coated with a thin layer of ...

Stainless Steel Hellmann Rain Gauge
I'm experiencing a problem with this. Rain droplets are adhering to the funnel, therefore not all rain is dripping into the container, and consequently the amount measured is low, e.g: 3.1mm compared to 3.3mm in a nearby copper Snowdon gauge. The manufacturer recommended a petroleum based product wi...
