You could try one of Gemini Data Loggers TinyTag Plus loggers with an external sensor.
http://www.geminidataloggers.com
As long as you can house the datalogger in some form of shelter to protect it from the weather you could then log earth temperatures hourly.

Likewise 19.7°C here in Sussex following another a cool night. An overnight minimum of 1.2°C and a Grass Minimum of -1.3°C a light / moderate SE'ly breeze developed backing to a light NE'ly by evening. - forecast for the weekend is for temps to reach 23°C.
