Yet more Snow!

On throwing open the curtains this morning, I was astonished to see it snowing hard at 8am here on the Wirral again. 5cm of snow were lying thickly everywhere, including trees and shrubs - very magical! Air temperature was 0.5 deg C at 8am, with dewpoint -1 deg. The weather radar showed Wirral on th...

Re: First significant winter snowfall on Wirral

The upper level winds have now carried snow up across the Wirral this evening. It's been snowing continuously since late afternoon - mostly light, but snow is blowing around on the ground in the gusty winds. Some small drifts forming now in sheltered spots. Air temp currently at -1.0 deg C (30m AMSL)...

Re: First significant winter snowfall on Wirral

Most of Tuesday’s snow cover at this end of the Wirral has now melted or sublimed in the very dry air. But it’s still around in woodland and areas sheltered from the sun.
Looking to the south now waiting to see what problems Friday's weather is likely to cause up here!

First significant winter snowfall on Wirral

At last! A thick covering of dry snow has fallen in the early hours at West Kirby, Wirral, and it looks like much of Merseyside too :- the first occasion this winter. About 5cm level snow was lying on the ground by 8am. The pressure fell suddenly overnight, and the wind backed to a light NW'ly earli...

Re: Orange Sun

Yes, I think my car windscreen had dust patches on it too. There were a few light showers here around 8am, only partially dampening the ground. When I went down to the town centre later in the morning the sky over the Dee estuary to the west looked brighter. Half an hour later "normal" blue sky with...

Orange Sun

With the winds increasing here ahead of ex tropical storm Ophelia, here on the Wirral I've been watching a really eerie looking sight! It's a grey, murky sky overhead but with an orange looking sun appearing dimly but clearly through what seems a thick haze. There is some patchy water droplet cloud ...

5- 10mm dia Hail in Polar Maritime air

At 5.15 this evening, a developing CB passed right overhead here on the Wirral, and gave a brief but intense fall of rain and hail. The hailstones were the largest I've seen here, exceeding 5mm in dia for many of them, and creating an ominously sounding din on the plastic car-port roof, under which ...

Re: Warmest day so far.

Today was also the warmest of the year so far, here near the NW end of the Wirral. The temperature rose rapidly in the afternoon, in bright sunshine, after a morning of stubbornly persistent medium and upper level cloud cover. The maximum of 25.2 deg C occurred around 4 to 5 pm this afternoon. The m...

First snow of the winter in Wirral

In the past fifteen minutes I've seen the first snowflakes of the winter falling here in West Kirby! (Or is it now officially spring?) It looks like a small cold pool has drifted over us behind a kind of frontal trough, pulling the air temperature down from 5 deg C at 8am to less than 2.2 deg C now ...

Warm spring sunshine

The past couple of hours have seen the sun breaking through thinning wave cloud here on Wirral - with almost continuous sunshine the past couple of hours.Temperature topped 14 deg C shortly after midday, with 11 deg dewpoint, so we are still in the mild air mass. There are signs of thicker cloud to ...
