No named storm but
The depression centred 987 mb with gale force winds and provided folk with a bit of of shock country-wide. Even for those in the Southeast. :P Not enough impacts forecast to warrant it being named apparently. Total rain in 24 hours here was 16.7 mm. Nothing unusual. It came down in torrents though f...

May warmth
Temperature climbed to 23.4°C today here on the south Devon coast in a brisk easterly wind.
I can't help feeling we don't get high temperatures in May these days.
I remember 27.4°C on 3rd May 1990.

April 2017 dryness
85% of the rainfall for April here fell on the first and last days. 9.9 mm on 1st and 15.6 mm on 30th. Total for month 30 mm. The rain on the last day ruined any chance of record dryness. Otherwise it would have beaten the previous driest April of 14.8 mm in 2011. It just goes to show how arbitrary ...

Re: Dry start to April
Only 12.7 mm here to 19th in my standard 5 inch copper raingauge.
Monday 24th looks likely to be the next possibility of rain, but the forecast charts don't show good agreement for any return to a westerly regime with rain bearing systems.
The garden could do with a wetting.

Usually a relatively dry month but can vary hugely.
2011 14.8 mm
2012 142.9 mm.

Re: The Snowdon 5 inch copper rain gauge
Thanks Adrian for that info and the link. Fascinating to see the 'Snowdon' was apparently just one of 5 patterns in 1920. Cost £2 . Somebody must have dreamt up the name 'Snowdon' having designed it I suppose. Present price £234. I can't find the receipt but I think I paid about £50 for mine in 1980.
