Contrail lobes

There was an interesting article on contrail lobes in the August edition of "Weather". Interestingly, I came across a pronounced example of contrail lobes yesterday, while walking the dog at 1832 BST, and managed to take a photo, which I will attempt to attached. The photograph was taken looking in ...

Re: Dry spell in SE England

The dry spell ended with a bang last night. Very loud thunder, lightning and torrential rain. 28.6mm in the gauge this morning. I expect places in Surrey will have exceeded that, since the radar showed the most intense band of rain to be south-east of here, and very slow moving.

Dry spell in SE England

From July 1st - September 14th, my rainfall has been 71.0mm. The estimated LTA for this period is 126.3mm. Thus over a 10-week period, the rainfall has been around 56% of normal, or a deficit of 55.3mm. Combined with temperatures higher than normal, this has resulted in quite a significant soil mois...

High September minimum temperature

Yesterday (Sept 6th) I recorded a minimum temperature of 18.4C, notably high for september. As I use 00-00 hours as my recording period, this minimum of 18.4C actually occurred at 00:00 on the 7th. The minimum in the overnight period 5th/6th was 19.3C. I don't have a long data record, but I see that...

Re: August 2016 - Another dry one?

Hi Nick, much the same here in Farnborough. Only 2mm in the second half of July, then 20.4mm on 1st/2nd of August, and nothing since. So I've been out with the watering can and occasionally the hose (trying not to use the hose as we are now on metered water). Looks like a 2-day heatwave next week th...

Re: July 2016 now wetter in Stornoway than in 2015

Being that bit older (!) I do remember the summer of '76 (and '75, which was also hot and dry). I did my 'O' Levels that year, at the end of June in the middle of the hottest spell. We lived in Sheffield so not as hot as further south, but I still measured 34C (with a thermometer not properly screen...

Re: 16th & 17th July 2016 - High dewpoints & UV

Interestingly, my dewpoint jumped from 16C at 2000 (BST) to 20C at 2015 (the highest of the day). As the air temp changed little (27.1C to 26.8C) I don't think it was a sea breeze. However, the wind from the south increased slightly throughout the afternoon so humidity has probably been imported fro...

Thunderstorms

Last night it was Farnborough's turn to get some big storms. I heard thunder first at around 11pm, but this was just a few rumbles. I was then woken at 2am by thunder and lightning almost directly overhead, and torrential rain. This lasted for about 45 minutes, then "normal" heavy rain persisted unt...

Re: Early May 2016 - Missing the rains

Thanks to 13.7mm of rain yesterday, May finished with 65.2mm, 124% of the estimated LTA. So a wet month. But 67% of the month's total fell on two days (10th and 31st).

Difficult Bank Holiday forecast

So, after all the various forecasts of rain on Bank Holiday Monday, it turned out to be a dry day here in Farnborough (and across most of the country from what I have seen). It was, however, overcast. We had an enjoyable walk as planned. I appreciate the forecasters' honesty earlier in the week, whe...
