First significant winter snowfall on Wirral

At last! A thick covering of dry snow has fallen in the early hours at West Kirby, Wirral, and it looks like much of Merseyside too :- the first occasion this winter. About 5cm level snow was lying on the ground by 8am. The pressure fell suddenly overnight, and the wind backed to a light NW'ly earlier this morning. This has brought slightly less cold and damper air: a kind of "warm sector" in a developing frontal feature moving westwards.

The air temperature is about half a degree above freezing point now, with a dewpoint of -1 deg C. This contrasts with an impressively low -7 deg C dewpoint (less than 60% humidity at a temperature around 2 deg C) yesterday afternoon, in a moderate easterly wind!

Also here Chris.
We caught a heavy snow shower for 30 mins here at 1830 UTC.
It gave a proper covering on the frozen surfaces.
The first time this has happened since 2010.

Snowfall settling on the south Devon coast is a bit of a rarity.

Most of Tuesday’s snow cover at this end of the Wirral has now melted or sublimed in the very dry air. But it’s still around in woodland and areas sheltered from the sun.
Looking to the south now waiting to see what problems Friday's weather is likely to cause up here!

The first snowfall here since December 2010. Now snowing qute heavily and the maximum temperature today has reached only -2.7°C. Today could end up with the lowest maximum I have ever recorded by quite a margin (2005).

Here at Farnborough:
3.5cm snow lying this morning at 0900 after yesterday's heavy snow showers.
4.5cm lying at 2015 after further mainly light snow today.
Max temp today -1.3C so looks like an ice day.
Possible heavy snow tonight; we shall see if it gets this far east.

The upper level winds have now carried snow up across the Wirral this evening. It's been snowing continuously since late afternoon - mostly light,but snow is blowing around on the ground in the gusty winds.

Some small drifts forming now in sheltered spots.
Air temp currently at -1.0 deg C (30m AMSL)

Snow depth at Farnborough peaked at 6.5 cm at 1730 yestetrday, before melting today - very little left now.
I had two ice days, March 1 (max -1.3C) and March 2 (max -0.9C). I use 00-00 as my reporting period. These are the only two ice days I have recorded in my nearly 5 years of living here, and they are in meteorological spring!
