Micro rain radar plots of warm front passing over Stornoway

Post by Edward Graham » Sun Sep 11, 2016 4:32 pm

I thought I'd share today's multi-plot from the METEK micro-rain radar (MRR) in Stornoway. It shows the advance of today's warm front over the region very clearly:

The four panels show (clockwise from top left): Fall Velocity (ms-1), Raw Reflectivity (dBZ), Doppler Velocity (ms-1), Rain Rate (mm/hr).One can see that the bright band (melting layer) has ascended from ~1600m at lunchtime to ~2700m about two-three hours later. The leading edge of the warm front shows an interesting kink. Rain rates at the surface are quite typically 1-3mm/hr.
A more detailed (close-up) version can be seen on my blog at: https://uhi-mahara.co.uk/view/view.php?id=5156 (as only thumbnails can be shown here).
Regular half-hourly tweets from the MRR can be viewed at: https://twitter.com/lewscastleradar
