This August is turning out so far to be rather dire - cool, cloudy and wet.
1st - 8th:
Mean minimum = 12.2C
Mean maximum = 20.6C
Mean = 16.4C
Rain = 36 mm
Sunshine = 30 hours
It doesn't get much worse than the above!
The weather seems to have been in terminal decline since the 20th July.
On this date last August, the mean temperature was a rather better 18.3C and there had been 52 hours of sunshine. The month ended up with 243 hours of sunshine and a drier than normal 37 mm of rain. Unless there's a big change in the weather I cannot see this August coming close to last years for sunshine, dryness and warmth.
It reminds me of the Augusts during the bad old summer days of 2007 to 2012.

Re: The Declining Summer of 2017
August has been decidedly chilly.
My absolute max to 20th is 20.5°C on 10th.
Average max to 20th is 18.8°C.
This compares with an 2001-2016 average Aug. max of 20.1°C.
There are a couple of warm days coming up, but whether they will compensate for August as a whole is doubtful.

Re: The Declining Summer of 2017
Not today Ken, summer's back and what a lovely change with a maximum of 24.7C, plenty of sunshine and with a DP of +21C made for a warm and rather humid day.
August so far (1st - 21st)
Mean minimum = 11.8C
Mean maximum = 21.0C
Mean = 16.4C
Rain = 83.2 mm
Sunshine = 104 hours.
Sunshine is still suffering as it has been ridiculously cloudy for the last few weeks.
Another warm one tomorrow and the forecast is looking OK(ish) so maybe the cool and wet weather since the 20th of July is over and something a bit warmer and drier is on the cards. Still, September usually is warm, dry and sunny (being the driest month of the year along with April). Plenty of summer left to enjoy.

Re: The Declining Summer of 2017
Certainly was a beautiful day here too Mick
Sun came out at 1130 and stayed out till sunset.
Max was 20.6°C.
Forecast of sun was not very good. Sunny spells were only forecast for later in the afternoon.
Trouble is, cloud cover is very difficult to forecast in such weak pressure gradient conditions.
West Cornwall was quite cloudy.
