October 2016 - 1st - 12th Dry, sunny and warm

Post by Nicholas Gardner » Wed Oct 12, 2016 6:45 pm

With only 4.6 mm on the 1st this is so far turning out to be a very dry month. Unusual for October in that normally it is the start of the 'rainy' season and one of the wetter months of the year bringing a big change from September (one the driest months of the year).

It is also turning out to be a sunny month. October is not normally that sunny with an average for the last 11 years of only 124 hours.

All this sunshine is helping the day temperatures and so far the days have been mild to warm though there have been quite a few rather chilly, starry nights thrown in as well that have dragged the mean minimum temperature down to well-below normal.

October 1st - 12th
Mean minimum = 7.5°C
Mean maximum = 17.0°C
Mean = 12.3°C
Rain = 4.6 mm
Sunshine = 76.5 hours
Annual sunshine total (Jan 1st - Oct 12th) = 1611 hours (a little less than the average for the last 11 years).

Not so dry since the 14th and now just over half-way through the month it's still a sunny but not so warm one.

October 1st - 17th:
Mean minimum = 7.6°C
Mean maximum = 16.6°C
Mean = 12.1°C
Rain = 26.5 mm
Sunshine = 102 hours.

The mean temperature is now around average though it has been the relative coldness of the nights that have dragged the temperature down as the days have generally remained on the warm side. Helped by the reasonably high amounts of sunshine (65% of the total possible).

No grass frosts yet though but that is not unusual.

Still picking a few raspberries, runner beans, cucumbers, chillies and the odd tomato but the strawberries have finally given up. And a second set of figs this season are nearly ripe but we're running out of time!

I have reached 35mm now, but that was thanks to 20mm falling between 0630 and 0930 on Sunday!
15.9C and 7.6C are my mean max/min, which are slightly below normal.
Looks like the easterlies will be returning - perfect timing for a trip to Cumbria this weekend! Looking at Roger's website ("the month so far") Stornoway has only had 12mm and Lerwick 19mm - extremely dry for them.
I can't remember when there was last a predominance of easterlies in October - it seems the month least likely for such a block.
