17th January - Rain in an Anticyclone

Post by Nicholas Gardner » Tue Jan 17, 2017 7:47 pm

My aneroid barometer was telling very big porky pies this afternoon whilst I was watching the rain and drizzle fall.

A mild, damp, murky, misty day with 2.6 mm of rain and an air pressure of 1036 hPa (and currently rising).

With the hills shrouded in mist and light rain, you could be forgiven for thinking we are in a warm sector of a low pressure system with an air pressure of 992 hPa rather than in a strong anticyclone. The lack of wind is the only thing giving it away at the moment.

Very different here in Farnborough. Wall to wall sunshine today, though cold, with a max of 5.0C after an early frost, and now already down to -1C. A welcome change after damp weather with persistent mainly light rain on Sunday and Monday.

Dry here after early morning (before I got up) drizzle. Only 0.6 mm.

Cloudy all day with a rather thin layer of stratus. Max 9°C.

It seems Nick that you drew the short straw today.

It's been overcast misty and damp since the 15th here, along with drizzle at times and light winds.

Pressure has remained high.

Today (18th) is cold, damp, and overcast again.
